USA Weekend Magazine, a publication that reaches 47.5 million readers through 600 newspaper partners, sponsors Make A Difference Day, the nation's largest day of service.
The fourth Saturday of each October, more than 3 million volunteers take action in their community and help an estimated 20 million people. USA Weekend’s partner in this day is, the Points of Light Foundation, founded by Paul Newman (philanthropist, Academy Award winner, and one of the biggest movie stars of the 20th century).
NetStarMaker teamed up with S.A.V.O.Y. (Stop All Violence On Youth), a non-profit organization created by Jaee Logan. Out of thousands of entries from across the U.S.A., NetStarMaker was selected as a finalist for 2006's national volunteer service event for the charitable work that Roger and Jaee did with under-privileged kids.
Numerous kids participated, having the time of their lives being video taped and posted to the NetStarMaker web site. It is unlikely that many of these kids would ever have the opportunity to make a music video, and be posted to an entertainment website, without the kindness of Roger and Jaee.
An especially heart-warming story was hearing about some of the kids who live in shelters, getting to see themselves on the computer for the very first time. Their eyes lit up with joy and happiness, just total amazement and smiles from ear to ear. The kids are anxious to do it again :).
The results were published in USA Weekend Magazine in mid-April, and although NetStarMaker & S.A.V.O.Y. didn't win the national award, we are being honored with a local Bay Area award.
USA Weekend, via the Oakland Tribune, will be presenting the award to NetStarMaker and S.A.V.O.Y. on April 25, 2007 in Oakland, Ca. At the same event, we are also being honored by Senator Don Perata's office with a Senate Resolution for promoting community efforts and volunteerism.
The performers from the Make A Difference Day event have been invited, as well as, local city officials, various congressional representatives, newspaper outlets, television stations, and corporations that are interested in our story.
As representatives of the San Francisco and Oakland areas, we welcome you to come join us and celebrate these wonderful honors. This event is open to everyone, so please spread the word, and invite all those who would like to join in this special occasion.
This will be a great opportunity to celebrate Roger and Jaee's benevolence, and also that of NetStarMaker & S.A.V.O.Y., but it also will be a day for networking and promotion of the works that we are all involved in.
Speaking on behalf of Roger, we believe he would be extremely honored by these awards. Roger didn't do this work to get accolades, he did it because that was the type of person he was, someone sincerely steadfast and compassionate toward struggling artists and those less fortunate – which makes these awards all the more sweet.
For Jaee, who lost his precious son Jaee Jaee, to a senseless act of street gun violence, we all need each other's support to stay strong and continue the journey together.
Thank you,
